Tallulah - thanks for your question. I think you make it clear more through your actions than your words. On a first date, meet at a public place and take your own transportation. If your date invites you home and you don't want to hook up (but you liked the date) you can simply say 'no thanks, but I do hope to see you again'. If he doesn't want to see you after that - good thing you found out early.

Coming from a man's viewpoint, I think the main way to make it clear that there will be no sex, is to not give signs that there will be sex of the 1st date. A woman can be nice, and not give off a hostile vibe, while being clear that no sex will be had on that date. Dont talk about sex for and extended period of time on the 1st date. You dont wanna seem that your not intereseted in sex at all but, but dont spend an hour talking about it if the guy brings up some sexual subject. But dont just immediatley, say "hey, no sex talk buddy." immediate turn off. Try and stay away from excess alcohol, which can have an affect on your good judgement. Dont be too touchy feely on the guy, because this will give him the wrong idea, notice i said, "TOO" touchy feely, which means, its ok to touch a guys shoulder, or his hand if your really into him, but you dont have to be all over him. Sometimes, especially if he brings up some subject involving sex, during conversation, you may simply ask "so, what do you think about sex on the 1st date?"
let him explain himself, then this gives you the opportunity to explain the way you feel while not exactly telling him " you can forget it tonight", by your explaination, if he's a good guy, he's gonna fugure out on his own from what you said that "hmm maybe i wont be gettin any tonight". hope ive helped a little bit.
