This is not a new direction for the podcast, but a new addition. I will be doing a "normal" Beautiful Places show as well as a Hiking show at many of the places I go. It gives the show a bit more variety and hopefully gives you some good information should you go there yourself. You can retrace my steps and show people you are planning to travel with where you want to go.
As for Blu-Ray, with one more addition (the longer silent shots!), I can put a BP show together with a Hiking show and offer something in a 15-20 minute show. Stay in touch, that and more will be coming!
Petr, I'm so glad my honeymoon advice went well for you and your new wife. If you go to Salt Lake, you can go up to the Tetons and Yellowstone or down to Arches/Bryce (show coming) and Zion. Maybe make it down to the Grand Canyon.
Don't worry my friend, poetry and magic are still a big part of Beautiful Places.
Haha! Yes. A lot of hiking and just a bunch of old trees! I could see myself saying that when I was younger as well. You have to be in the right space to enjoy the bristlecone pines.
That was pretty much a road trip through the park plus a few short hikes off the road and one long hike where I was eaten alive by mosquitoes. They didn't seem to care about the amount of Deet I had on me, they just kept coming. My Son and I were able to take an airboat ride where I got some great shots. I'd love to go back and canoe/kayak around the lower areas.
Thank you Mishka. I really appreciate that you watch the videos and spend the time to comment on them. They're free to watch, but I prefer folks pay with a comment. :)
Yes, I would love to spend a summer in zion. I could film a lot of it and hike to many places I was not able to get to on my short adventure there. There is so much to see.
Thanks. Shooting each episode is an escape for me as well, so I am very thankful to everyone who watches the show when I am sitting there looking at the beauty I am filming. It really is the best job in the world. Oh yeah, there's teaching also...
Thanks for keeping me on my toes TexasGrillChef! The shows come out in "seasons" and sometimes there is a little space between seasons. The latest season is coming to a close, but I have already shot five of next season's shows and will try to keep the break to a shorter time than last time. I have some awesome shows lined up from Zion National Park, Sequoia NP, The Everglades, The White Mountains: Methuselah Grove, and Bryce Canyon. Stay tuned.
Believe me, I agree totally. That's the problem I have with these videos also. I would love to bring you one every week so you have a new one to look forward to to break up your days. We are looking for a sponsor for the show right now. If we find that special company that joins the show, it will happen! I hope you and everyone else will hold on until that sponsor comes and then tell them how much you appreciate them when they do.
This is a favorite mountain of mine and this was an amazing trip. I climbed the mountain and made camp about 400 ft. below the summit. I went the rest of the way to the top after dinner and watched the sunset over the Sierras, climbing down to my camp in the dark by headlamp afterward. The next morning I got up before the sunrise and climbed back to the summit for a spectacular sunrise over Lake Tahoe. Some trips have moments that stick with you as perfect memories, and being there to see the sunrise and sunset on this mountain is still with me. I hope you enjoy the show. (and if you're a Rush fan, you'll love the quote at the end)
Thanks Mary. This show is a perfect example of finding a great show in terrible weather. It was cloudy and raining all weekend. No views of the mountain at all. But I went out anyway with my rain gear. It got so bad I had to sit under some trees for a couple hours and just get out of the downpour. Well, around 2pm the clouds moved away and the beauty of Paradise came to life. Clouds still came through from time to time but then they were my friend because clouds pushing in around the peaks make perfect shots. This show and the other took three trips to Washington to get, with some bad events keeping the shooting from being completed. But it all lead to me being there at that moment to capture the clouds falling over the ridge and the foggy meadow full of wildflowers. I'll never complain about complications again.
Sorry about that. :) I'm sure you are talking about the quote at the end. Yes, there are some tricky French mountain names that gave me a problem. I did my best!
Everett, I think it may be a slow connection. If you hit the play button and then hit the pause button you can watch the bar travel as the podcast downloads. When the bar finished, you should be able to push play and watch the whole show.
Yes, I teach Earth Science as well and show these episodes to my students. I always try to put a little geology in each show because it is always amazing and wonderful how the geologic history of a place has created such beauty.
Thanks Matt. I'm glad you are noticing the improvement. I bought a new camera (Sony EX1) right before this show was shot. Crater Lake was the first show shot with it.
Thanks Doug! Wow, a hero and a pioneer... Really, it's about me putting my love for the outdoors together with my love for photography and video. The chocolate, when dipped in the peanut butter, just worked. I hope everyone has the chance to find what they love to do in life and then find some success doing it. I am very thankful I did.
Thanks Glen! It's about seeing new places and seeing places that you may have already been to but maybe need a little reminder about. I'm glad I brought back the mountain to you and I still watch this episode from time to time to remind myself about what I experienced on the mountain.
I plan to go everywhere! Australia is on my list, but it is so far away and the flight costs so much. Once we get a sponsor for the show I'll be coming your way.
There are beautiful places everywhere. Norway has a unique landscape that is very beautiful, but different from what I am used to. I'm sure when I go there I will be amazed!
My great grandparents were from Norway and I hope to someday spend a Summer touring and staying in the country. I'm sure when I am there I will feel as if I am home. When I see images of Norway I get that feeling.
Brad, I have enough footage to make 15-30 min. episodes. Would you buy them? The download would be really big, so they would have to be Blu-Ray. Really, it's about demand. If there is enough demand, we'll do it.
As for the places you mentioned for me to go, I have episodes from Bryce, Zion, Zion Narrows, Everglades, Methuselah Grove, and The Giant Forest in Sequoia NP. Zion is almost finished! The rest will be coming out slowly if we don't have a show sponsor and quickly if we find a sponsor for the show. I plan to go to the places you mentioned and many more around the world. It's really a matter of finding a company that would like to come along on the journey.
Thanks Betty! Hope you can take that Big Sur trip some day. And thank you also fermin.
Mike, I'm gonna make some special shows just for you without that moron talking all the time. :) I totally agree that a show with just the place and just the sounds would be awesome! You have to watch and write nice things when I do!
Thanks for the great comments Betsy, Abbie, Clyde, Michael, flossy, feeskate, and Mishka! I appreciate you all taking the time to sign in and comment on this show. What you don't see in the show is me freezing my tail off for these shots. :) Someday we are going to release an episode of bloopers and footage of me shooting and then you will see the pain I sometimes go through to get the shots. Just imagine sitting in the snow covered meadow as the sun goes down and the fog rolls in. Ice formed on my jacket, hat, and glasses as I sat and captured the sunset. All the people left and I was the only one out there crazy enough to be there. I see so much that others do not because I am there freezing at sunset or getting up before the sun rises to catch the sunrise. The Coyote walking across the shot was early morning, and he was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. Those are times that are special.
Also, I had a great conversation with the man whose wife is seen skiing in the background of one of the shots.
Thanks Mary, Paco, Michael, and Phil! This is my favorite show to date. It was also one of my most memorable trips. When I'm going through rough times, I just mentally put myself there again, watching the sunset behind Delicate Arch, and I feel better. When I really need help, I watch this episode. As I go around to other places, and sometimes things don't work out with the clouds, or rain, or heat, I just remember that sometimes things work out like they did at Arches. You just have to keep going and be there when the magic happens. North Dome was a similar experience.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I wish I could capture the smell of the place for you all and transmit it in HD. :) There's another season of shows coming up as soon as we find a sponsor for the show, and my new camera captures the places even better than the camera I used in the first season.
Thanks for the comments everyone! Havasu Canyon is indeed a spiritual and awesome place. There are so many things, like the cloudy emerald water, the terraced waterfalls, and the canyon walls. Some things you don't see in the show are the trash lined canyon and the trash strewn villiage you go through on the way there. I was picking up trash on the trail until I just plain had too much and had to set the bag on the side of the trail next to some other trash bags. I'm not going to judge the people living in the villages harshly though, as the town I live in is similarly trashed. It's so easy for some to not respect the place where they live. And it only takes a percentage...
Once you get to the falls and the campground you are in a magical place.
