As a woman I look for a man who has the desire and capacity to build a relationship based on mutual love and respect. For me, there needs to be an interest in not only building one another up, and working to please each other, but a natural inclination towards creating something unique from the forging of two personalities.
A big turn off for me is men who are too independent and mainly oriented toward themselves. Some men seem to have compartments in their minds for things such as work, hobbies, money, material things, success, etc. But within those compartments there's no space for a woman. She's largely left out of his life, and what space she occupies is marginalized. A woman needs to know she plays a valuable role in a man's life, that she is a part of him, rather than some rented apartment off in the corner of his mind that he visits on occasion when he's in the mood.
One other thing - if your family (especially your mother) is more important to you than we are, you can forget about it!
