<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Bif Bam Pow Wow
Episode “Simpsons”

Tom: Coming up a look of everyone’s favorite yellow skin dysfunctional family. Welcome geeks, nerds, misfits, outcasts, and fellow crazed loners to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow, I am Tom your host and I for one would like to welcome our Ant overlord’s. Now if you got that referenced then you need more help than I could possibly provide in these few short minutes. It comes of course from one of the most eminently quotable shows in the history of television, the long running Simpsons.
Today I take a quick look at some of my favorite Simpson’s moments and collectables. As we all know the Simpsons debuted as animated shorts on the Tracey Ullman show way back in 1987, and they have been running continuously in half hour format since 1989. By my estimation Bart should be in his early thirties and Homer and Marge despite graduating high school in the seventies are still somehow 35 years old and Maggie is still a baby.
Nevertheless the show continues to bring us biting social satire and cutting edge comedy, now sure every year you get all of the haters who are saying oh man this Simpsons have totally lost it every since season eight it is all downhill man. To me it is still one of the bass written shows on television. Probably what is just as amazing is the amount of merchandising that has spawned from the show and its characters, too much to cover in the span of the short, short show.
But I do want to mention a few Simpson’s collectables that I think are totally worth seeking out in my picks and pans. Most of the Simpsons action figure’s in toys have been sadly discontinued the and you can watch their values explode on Ebay. There is however a new line of figure’s they came out in conjunction with the release of the Simpsons movie, there by Macfarlane toys and I highly recommend anything by Macfarland. My favorite is Homer and piggy, you know, spider pig, spider pig, does what ever a spider pig does.
Now also in conjunction with the movie Fox did a great promotion where they turned a dozen seven elevens across the country into Kwik E Mart’s, among the limited edition merchandise in those stores were actual boxes of Krusty O’s and cans of Buzz cola. These of course became instant collectables so if you can get your hands on some of those do, I have a feeling they will be worth a lot of doh.
Now comics wise there are a couple of things worth mentioning, Simpson’S number one comics it is the first Simpson’S comic so for now runs between 10 and $20.00 depending on addition but I don’t think it will really become collectible until further on down the road but I think it is a important part of American history don’t you?
Also with the 711 promotion they did a Radioactive Man comic and those were very good as well and of course they’re going to be collectible. Next not necessarily collectible but definitely must haves for Simpson’S fans is the latest music compilation from the series, the Simposn’s Testify. 37 tracks plus four unaired bonus tracks., my favorite the Lady Riff sung by Ricky Gervais to Marge. It is the best soundtrack album ever.
Lastly the season by season DVD collection’s, now they’re up to season 10 and they are legendary for their commentary tracks. Very good stuff and who does not want all of the Simpsons on DVD. I digress completely and utterly, I worry about the deeper implications of this cartoon on what goes on around me particularly the youth which is why we recently went to talk to one of those ivory tower types to get their take on the Simpsons in the impact on our culture.
Deb: Hi my name is Deb Foote, I am currently teaching a course entitled the Simpsons as satirical authors. The course came about over a period of time because I had noticed that students in the humanity classes that I taught students had to buy big $100 textbooks and talk about things that they did not see any connections to what I wanted to do was create a course where students could come in knowing something about the subject material and then relate the television series as a textbook..
Q: What Simpson’s character do you must identify with?
Deb: I think part of me is Mrs. Krabapple, and part of me is a smattering of other characters. My favorite character is Krusty the clown.
Q: What is your favorite episode?
Deb: The NRA episode where homer gets a gun is fabulous because it presents, I think the best episodes of the Simpsons present both sides and leave a ambiguous ending.
Q: Is not the Simpson’s class a “fluff” class?
Deb: Definitely not I think that they’re surprised at the amount of work and I think that the responsibility of the class on my end has been to make sure that it is a substantial class.
Q: Is the Simpsons more controversial today than when it started?
Deb: I think as an instructor, someone who was around before the Simpsons and after the Simpsons I could see the controversy when I was in school regarding the Simpsons and how much these days it seems like nothing. Whether it is actually nothing or we’re just desensitized to it I am not sure but I know that my brother still does not allow his daughter’s to watch it. I know there are a lot of students in the class who say I was not allowed to watch this as a child.
Q: What is your favorite simpson’s quote?
Deb: There is the one where Moe asks, and the gay episode Moe asks Homer he says, geez you and Marge arent cousins are you because Bart does not want to shoot a deer and Lisa is a vegetarian.
Tom: Now that is one cool human being, I have so much to learn I simply must go back to school and get my GED some day. I hope I learnsed you all somethings reals goods today. For now I’m going to leave you with a quote from someone very near and dear to me, the comic book guy. Freaking kids, I do not need this I have a master’s degree in folklore mythology, late.

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Bif Bam Pow Wow
Episode “G.I. Joe”

Tom: Every since there were Barbie dolls for girls boys had to have their own dolls, action figure’s, and they’re probably just to keep us from undressing our sisters Barbie’s. Today we take a look at the action figure that started it all.
Welcome collectors and assorted man-children two another exciting episode of Bif Bam Pow Wow, I am Tom your anatomically correct and fully articulated host. Now once upon a time back when everything was still black and white we boys only had sticks and stones to play with. Then all along came a doll, a doll with razor stubble, guns, grenades, and the Kung fu grip. The year was 1964 and that doll was the baby Jesus, know it was actually G.I. Joe and it only felt like the second coming.
The world changed overnight and it is only gotten cooler and more fun ever since. Good Ol' Joe made it not only acceptable but necessary for us guys to spend pour entire allowance and every rainy day playing with dolls. Alright action figure is, don’t be so sensitive, dude come on. It did not take long for others and Hasbro to see the potential and G.I. Joe soon shocked the nation and awed parents and kids with its array of tie ins and accessories.
Now let’s get right to Tommy’s picks and pans, alright? I want to talk about Joe, past, present and maybe even see what the future holds. OK my fine feathered friends with Paramount finally regressing on a live action G.I. Joe film slated for 09, there’s going to be plenty of new merchandise tie ins. But for now I would like to mention some of my own G.I. Joe picks.
The first thing I want to talk about is G.I. Joe The Real American Hero issue number 21 from Marvel comics, it is the silent issue. Snake Eyes rescuing Scarlet from Storm Shadow, it is the first appearance of Storm Shadow it is ninja action all the way, so good, totally silent and action packed. Waaa!
Alright I also want to mention something that is near and dear to my heart, the G.I. Joe cartoon. We all remember it right? You come home from school, you sit on the couch and you watch G.I. Joe, the lasers flying everywhere and nobody getting shot, the planes exploding in the parachute coming down. It is like how did that guy not die? How does nobody die?
Oh, I also want to mention the G.I. Joe collector’s club exclusives. They are from Hasbro; they put these out in limited edition reproduction accessory sets for club members only. And this Green Beret set came out in 2007 in a run of only 1200 they’re awesome and instantly collectible.
Folks I cannot do a show without panning something, you know me right, well by now you do right? G.I. Joe, Transformers. It is a four issue limited series from Marvel and boy is it bad. Just really avoid it like the plague. Spend your dollars elsewhere, it is just so lame the art is lame, the read is lame, and the dialog is terrible. They just kind of forced the Joes together and the Transformers and it kind of works and absolutely no way at all.
If you have the original, I love this part, ladies and gentlemen believe it or not issue number 155 of G.I. Joe The Real American Hero which is the last issue in the entire G.I. Joe run is actually worth more than an issue number one. Shocked? I knew you would be, that is right, the print run on issue number 155 is a fraction of the print run on issue number one, so it is worth an exceptional amount more. We’re talking like probably $50.
Now folks I hope you have all your permission slip signed so passed them forward because we are going to take a little field trip to me an ultra cool family of G.I. Joe collectors.
Ron Biallas: Hi, I am Ron Biallas and this is my son Joe and my wife Beth, we are part of the G.I. Joe collectors club of Chicago, and yes we collect G.I. Joe and actually play with them. We actually play G.I. Joe’s together in the backyard here and this summer we made a new big building, like a world war two scene and we have an actual Germans in there that the G.I. Joes are coming to attack.
Beth: We love playing with G.I. Joes, we’ll of collecting them, and it is a wonderful way to teach your children about history as well as develop their imagination.
Ron Biallas: This is the Pearl Harbor series, this guy here is supposed to be an Israel soldier, you have got Grant right here, you have got Patton, you have got Eisenhower, and I have got them all. Hey Tom I got this at Graham Crackers it is the G.I. Joe jersey. My adventure team vehicle, that was awesome it just made the whole collection that is what it is all about right here.
Beth: If you are a local and you’re in the Chicago area and GI Joe interests you as much as it interests us please join us every second Saturday of the month at the Chamber public library from 10:00 until 12:00 to talk about G.I. Joe and play G.I. Joe, if you are not local than you can access information on the web through the national G.I. Joe club.
Joe: You can go to www.Mastercollector.com.
It is always good to meet kindred spirits we must arrange a play date with them some time, hmm. Well that is all we have for this episode of Romperroom, I’m going to leave you with a quote from the immortal Sergeant Slaughter, give your hearts to America Joes because your butts belong to me.

Episode “Battlestar Galactica”

Tom: Considered by some to be the redheaded stepchild of Star Wars, the original Battlestar Galactica is finally getting the props that it deserves and I am here to tell you that life here began out there. Welcome members of the 13 tribe to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow I am Tom your host. Perhaps better known as the author of the book of Kobol, no OK I guess they should not have even made that joke right?
Anyway today I’m going to just barely scratch the surface of the Battlestar Galactica universe, and take a look and how the new Galactica as breathed some life into the brand. Then we will sit down and have a drink with our old friend Richard Hatch.
Battlestar Galactica premiered in 1978 and it follows the plight of a bunch of ragtag space refugees in search of the mythical planet earth after the rest of the Colonies were destroyed by the evil Cylons. It featured great music, great characters, and recycled special effects and just a huge budget which no doubt contributed to its demise. It would never have even seen the light of day if it were not for the success of Star Wars but you may be surprised to learn that the story concept actually predates Star Wars, well allegedly.
There was a big lawsuit, which was actually settled in Battlestar Galactica is favor in 1980, but at that point Galactica was already off the air. It lived on through toys, comics, movies, video games, and even a reimagined TV series. Well let’s take a look at some of my favorites.
The first thing that I want to recommend is the Battlestar Galactica epic series DVD; oh this thing is so cool. It is every single episode of the original series put all together in a nice collection. Who does not want that, the coolest part is that it comes inside of a Cylon head. Oh this thing looks so good on the shelf you really should check it out and the episodes are awesome to.
I also want to mention the old Marvel comics, which lasted about 23 issues and ran from 1979 to 1981. They were sort of a disappointment at the time because Universal would not let them use anything from the series that preceded the episode, Lost Planet of the Gods, a totally missed opportunity to explore some really interesting story lines, so sort of disappointing. Ooh, but I will say that tighten books has reproduced these issues and one hardcover volume, they look really, really good. They have totally cleaned up the artwork and I would say that that is totally worth having.
Now my personal favorite, the Mattel action figures, the Cylon ship and the Colonial Viper, the things were so awesome as a kid because they actually shot missiles and anything that shot missiles when I was a kid was a total must have. Now the problem was that they actually shot missiles so it was a choking hazard and they were all recalled, total bummer. Of course Mattel Did like Star Wars they did 3 ¾ inch toys and 12 inch dolls only two of them though, the Cylon and the colonial pilot. So it just two of those and as with most action figure is the weapons are a little more rare than the figure’s themselves. Mattel also did various spaceships and other pieces that are highly collectible and worth seeking out I would say.
OK folks if you have the original colonial viper, oh it is so cool I wish I had one. Well it only goes for about $50.00. That is pretty reasonable right? I would try to get one if I could. Now hang loose everybody because my friend Mary is going to catch up with none other than the original captain Apollo himself, Richard Hatch.
Richard Hatch: The original Battlestar touched people in a very profound way, even though it was only on one year and the interesting thing was that we did not go off because of ratings. We went off because you could not produce a theatrical size series on a weekly basis back in that day and age because of the technology. I mean today cable that operated shows reach 18,000,000, 20,000,000 we reached 65,000,000 on opening night, and then we reached an average of 24 to 34,000,000 on a weekly basis.
Battlestar has such a powerful story, and I have to admit 30 years ago I loved the back story and I love the mythology, I love the actors in the characters, but I was frustrated with the writing and frustrated more that we were not going into the core Battlestar story which we could not do because the networks were terrified of SCI Fi, terrified of being too provocative, and so really in that age and time we could not do it.
Mary: Any particular character arcs that you would have liked too seen have the series gone on a couple more seasons?
Richard Hatch: Well I honestly I just wanted to get into deeper, more provocative subject manner, when I say that it is easy to say that but the story was about surviving in space against a enemy that sought to destroy you. So how do you survive in space when you’re cut off from home, how do you find solutions to all those incredible, insurmountable challenges? We did not get a chance to get into all that; we barely touched the surface of that which the new show goes into, whether it is getting water, fuel, energy, this or that. We touched upon it but again in that era they were looking more for fun and for something that was entertaining as opposed to something that would be more provocative and edgy. And yet the premise really addressed going in that direction, but I do think that if we would’ve stayed on another year or two we would have gone in that direction.
But obviously we brought a great sense of humor, a great bravado. You know I love the new story, but I know the original story backwards and forwards which is why I have written 7 to 8 books and graphic novels, and I feel like a really understand the mythology, the back story, the history, who these characters are, I can feel them. The new story I just am getting to know it and being introduced to a piece by piece, there was something wonderful about the original Battlestar but you know people love to compare and they love to judge, and I will only say this to everybody. You can actually love both shows for different reasons, and that we all need to look beyond the surface and look of the deeper elements of something, and any show is about people.
Tom: Richard Hatch, a hell of a guy, anyway I have to book baby but this is not really the end, keep your eyes peeled for part two of our Battlestar Galactica series, where I talk about the awesome, new Galactica, Holler. In the meantime I’m going to leave you with this thought, in my best narrator voice, some believe there may yet been brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens.

Episode “The Hulk”

Tom: He is one of the most recognizable Marvel creations, yet he has gone through many incarnations in his 40 plus years including another big-screen remake. Today we take a look at everyone's favorite raging monstrosity.
Welcome Hulka-maniacs to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow. I am Tom your incredible host and I know what you’re thinking. Am I a man or a monster, or both? Well we will get to that later, but first I want to bring you up to speed on the Hulk.
The Hulk was a classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby creation. It first appeared in Marvel comics, the incredible Hulk #1, 1962. His story begins when Bruce Banner, nuclear physicist, suffers that old super hero fate of accidental exposure to gamma radiation. Now it is all Rick Jones fault, he came under the test field, and Banner had to go running out there, get down and boom, stupid Rick Jones, why if I would punch him I could.
And it doesn’t kill Banner; it just seriously messes with his genes. Well at first Banner would be normal by day, and turn into a big green rageaholic at night. At that point most of us would probably swear off drinking. Not me of course, I just need it too bad. But Banner learns to control his powers to some degree and he uses his powers for good.
Over the years the Hulk has been a member of the Avengers and the Defenders. Ooh and an interesting historical note when the Hulk appeared in issue number one he was actually grey. Because coloring technology at the time couldn’t consistently reproduce grey, they just changed Hulk to green for his subsequent issues, very interesting huh?
Now when most of us see things go from grey to green just give it a sniff and throw it away, which is probably why that first issue is so valuable. I will discuss more of that in my pick and pans.
Alright my dear friends, the first thing I would like to recommend to all the Hulk a files out there is Hulk the End. A wonderful one shot by Peter David. It is just fantastic, a little depressing at the end. But I would say it is probably my favorite Hulk read ever. Definitely try to find it. The one shot has only been reprinted once, but it is totally worth it if you can dig it up, really good stuff.
Now the other one I would like to recommend is the more recent World War Hulk, the miniseries by Marvel. Oh man, this is alike a huge slug fest between Hulk and all the other super heroes in the marvel universe. It is just awesome, he is just kicking everybody’s butt, it is fantastic and oh I really like to see Black Bolt screaming in the Hulks face, so cool.
Ok for fans of the awesome seventies Bill Bigsby and Lou Foregno TV show The Incredible Hulk, I have go to warn you about the DVD that came out a few years ago, The Incredible Hulk, the television series, ultimate collection. Well guess what people; there is nothing ultimate about this. It contains eighteen “select” episodes, and was obviously a rush job to capitalize on the Ang Lee film. But Universal has redeemed itself, by now releasing a far superior season by season collection. Season 2 is out now, and is totally where the series hits its stride. Ultimately all five seasons and all 83 episodes will be available, get it.
My next item I am going to have to classify as both, a pick and a pan. I can do that alright, it is my show, alright shut it. It is the Incredible Hulk, the complete comic collection on CD rom. It spans 43 years and includes all 535 complete issues of the Hulk comic book, even the original ads.
Now some of the scans of the earlier issues are a little soft, you can see the torn pages and things like that. But really you get every single Hulk comic for like forty bucks. I mean that is better than spending like a million bucks to get every issue. But I do have to say I am a purist. I got to say people, who wants to read a comic from a computer? Huh? I want to lay down on the couch, have it up here, and feel the paper. Come on. Let’s do that, alright, alright, getting out of whack here.
Getting back to issue number one of the Incredible Hulk, from Marvel comics, nineteen sixty two. If you have the original whew, you better bag and board that thing. Put it in a cool dry place because I have seen that book go for anywhere from ten to twenty grand. Eww, daddy I wish I had me one of those. Anyway, as many of you know there is a new Hulk flick in the works, and I have brought back one of my favorite customers and a huge Hulk fan, Davey Soul. To deliver an open letter to director Louis Leterreir, of what fans expect out of this latest Hulk incarnation. Davey take it away, just try to stay calm, don’t make yourself angry.
Thank you Tommy. Dear Louis Leterrier. I have heard a rumor that you are directing a revamped, or reboot, or reimagining of the Hulk franchise, which Ang Lee kicked off in 2003, I just have a few little hints to maybe improve upon what’s already going on here. First of all, actually maybe I am a minority here, I really liked the Ang lee Hulk movie. I thought it was very character driven. A lot of people complained that there wasn’t enough action, not enough, Hulk smash.
Personally I actually thought maybe there was a little too much Hulk smash when it came to the end, the big conclusion between Nick Noltes character and the Hulk, when it got down to that, it was a little incomprehensible. The movie it seemed to actually have a satisfying wrap-up at the end, before we had to have some sort of arch nemesis. Next up I have got this topic here of the multiple Hulks from the comic books, I would steer away from that. I know that we have got the gray Hulk, Mr. fix it, we got the professor, we just want the classic Hulk for right now, big, mean, green, Hulk smash.
Finally you were probably hired on as the action director known best for your transporter series here in the states; I think maybe you have already done the perfect Hulk movie, Danny the Dog, a.k.a. Unleashed. I am saying that maybe we will just take a copy of that on DVD, do some Ted Turner kind of color washing.
We will take Jet Li, color him green. He will be the Hulk, he has this very childlike innocence to him but he is a very violent character none of the last. We will get Bob Hochkins in their too, we'll paint him green and he can either be the leader or the abomination. And the two of them will sort of just duke it out but in their own very character driven, nonspecial effects, big bombastic BS like that.
So please hear all these things out, stay on task, you're probably doing a great job. I remain, a friend of the fans, Davey Soul. Well I'm ready to drop this in the mail, now I just need an envelope.
Tom: Good job Davey, you really kept your anger in check, nicely done. Well we are running a little long here folks and you know the suits back at corporate are the last people that I want to make angry so I'm just going to leave you with these parting words; madder Tom get, stronger Tom become, Tom is strongest one there is.

Episode “Indie Comix, Artist and writers”

Tom: Indie comics, they can be crude or complex in both their style and content. But there is no denying their influence on mainstream culture. Today, we take a look at one of our favorite contemporary underground artists. Today we take a look at one of my favorite contemporary underground artists.
Welcome friends and foes to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow wow. I am Tom your crudely rendered host. Not you are a fan of indie artists the chances are that you have heard of Jeffrey Brown. Jeffrey burst on the scene in 2002 with his self published graphic novel Clumsy.
Since then he is become somewhat of an indie comic darling. Churning out a bunch of new titles including a couple of my favorites, Be a Man, and I'm going to be small. For which he won an Ignuts award for best mini comic.
Okay friends if you're looking for a good starting point with Jeffrey Brown then I highly recommend you begin where he did with his debut graphic novel, clumsy. It has been reissued by top shelf productions where you can find all of his latest title as well. Now like a lot of his work, it is largely autobiographical and it will dwells on relationships and Brown's key everyday observations.
The thing about this book that I relate to, and makes me feel less alone in the universe, which is what indie comics are good for. Is it kind of lets me know that I'm not the only person who is a needy psychopath when it comes to relationships. Thanks. Well this should serve as a good entrée into the world of underground comics.
If you are looking to dig a little deeper, well then I have some great recommendations that will set you off right on your path to comic book enlightenment. Perhaps one of the more influential underground artists of our time, if you can still call him underground, would have to be one of my personal favorites, Daniel Clowes.
From ghost world to art school confidential. Clowes has influenced pop culture in ways that we have never even realized. Now Mr. Clowes has recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. And Mr. Clowes we really wish you luck out there and we hope that we see a lot more from you buddy. Maybe another movie or maybe more than one comic a year. Because that would be really sweet, your stuff is awesome and I am way into it.
Another favorite that I have absolutely got to recommend is Craig Thompson. You must drop what you're doing right now, go out, and find yourself a copy of blankets. This is an incredible book, it is sort of another relationship tale, but it is so well done and so sweet and really romantic. The art is fantastic and it is really, really good. Go get it. Blankets by Craig Thompson. Do it right now.
Now folks you know me, I just can't do a show unless I pan in something. And unfortunately the target of my ire is going to be Tek Jansen. That's right, Stephen cold there went through Oni press and did a Tek Jansen comic. You would think that would be funny right? You'd be cracking up the whole time, grabbing yourself laughing. It didn't happen. It did not happen in any way. I wasn't feeling it. Steve not at all. I would say avoid this one, sorry Oni, you have other good stuff though. We'll keep our eyes peeled.
Okay folks I've do all you collectors out there are thinking, well where can I get my hands on something that might be worth something for an indie comic. Unfortunately all this stuff has been reprinted so many times that it is hard to find any of it that actually holds any value. I suppose a first print of any one of these might be worth something, but you know. Not really. a lot of these artists have their own personal sketch books that they occasionally sell. Now that would be something that might actually have some value. Depending on the artists will kind of dictate what it might be worth.
Okay friends buckle up we have a very special treat for you. Because we got a chance to recently hang out with our aforementioned hero, Jeffrey Brown. Oh man, we got to ask him a couple of questions and he is a really cool guy so I think you are going to like this. He looks just like his cartoon self you know. All black and white and kind of squiggly, well just check him out.
Jeffrey Brown: I am Jeffrey Brown I am a Chicago cartoonist. I started doing comics about six or seven years ago. My most recent book is called incredible change bots and it is a parody of the Transformers but I'm better known for my autobiographical books. My first book was called clumsy. And my next autobiographical book is called Little things and that will be out spring of 2008.
Q: Who is your favorite superhero?
Jeffrey Brown: I guess that Wolverine has always been my favorite superhero. Which I feel like is really clichéd now. But I was always a Marvel guy growing up.
Q: What alternative artist today do you feel deserve more recognition?
Jeffrey Brown: The two that spring to mind are Honors Nelson and Paul Hunchmeyer. They are both on a web site called the holy consumption with me but they are doing a lot of really great work.
Q: What else are you currently working on?
Jeffrey Brown: Right now I just started a book called funny misshapen body, which kind of covers high school, college, art school. And it kind of chronicles my life through those times and becoming a cartoon artists and when I first started drawing clumsy. So I just finished the script for that, and I just started drawing it. So it will be about a year before that is done.
Q: If you could have one super power…?
Jeffrey Brown: Tough call, I you know with the classic invisibility versus flying I think I would have I was always into invisibility. It just seems slightly safer.
Q: Are you sure that's the superpower that you would want?
Jeffrey Brown: I think I'm going to stick with invisibility, um yeah. The other one I always wanted as a kid was shooting lightning but yeah. I will switch, let's go from invisibility to shooting lightning at stuff. People, things, criminals.
Tom: Awesome, special thanks once again go out to our personal friend Jeffrey Brown. Wow I am feeling inspired right now to go out and start my own graphic novel based on my relationships. Well on second thought, maybe you can just go and read the restraining orders by yourself, if you are interested. We will save that for another episode. in the meantime we have to go. And I want to leave you with these parting words; see me, feel me, touch me, love me.

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Bif Bam Pow Wow
Episode “Flash Gordon, Queen, and classic superheroes”

Tom: Before there was a Howard Stern and yes even before there was an Oprah. There was someone else who could rightfully claim the throne as kind of all media. Yes I am talking about Flash Gordon.
Welcome mere mortals, welcome to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow wow. Flash Gordon, he made his debut way back in 1934 in the classic Alex Raymond comic strip. Since then Flash has stared in a radio show, live action serials. A TV series, movies, and even has his own postage stamp. Go figure.
He is truly one of the all time classic superheroes if you don’t know much about Flash well then shame on you. If you don’t now abut Flash well then shame on you. I don’t know what they are teaching kids in school these days man I cant do everything for you people can I?
But I am going to recommend an excellent website. This should bring you up to speed. Check out sflare.com. click on Flash Gordon a history, there you go. There will be a quiz later so take some notes. Now, I have a lot to talk about here, 70 plus years of Flash. So I want to get right to toms pick and pans.
If you are looking for a great primer on the origins of Flash Gordon, well checkers publishing has been putting out a great volume by volume set of Alex Raymond’s original Sunday comic strips. Now the reproductions are a little muddy. And they could have printed the illustrations a little larger. But this is still an indispensable collection for hardcore fans.
Also for fanatic of the original 1930’s Flash Gordon stuff, Buster Crab serials, good stuff, they can all be found on DVD, but watch out though, this stuff is in the public domain. So everyone and there uncle can kind of throw it together and the quality is sort of all over the board.
Look for the box set released by Image entertainment ok? That is the one you want. It came out just a few years ago. It reportedly has the best transfers and contains all the episodes from all three serials.
Alright now, here is the real treat, for fans the have long awaited the DVD release of the 1980’s Flash Gordon movie. This is so awesome, it came out in 2007, the savior of the universe addition. Oh this is so near and dear to my heart people. I saw this when I was a kid and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It is just cheesy awesome. I mean Flash Gordon plays the football game against all of like Ming guards and stuff. It’s really good. go Flash go. She does that, it’s so hot. I love it, alright, alright, alright.
Also the soundtrack, it is so good. it is the album by queen. Oh sure you could go to iTunes and download it, clicky, clicky, but if you are lucky enough to find this on Vinyl and know some old geezer who knows how to operate a turntable. Then plug in your headphones and get ready to blast off space.
Alright my favorite part of the show, if you have the original, we are going to talk about Flash Gordon, strange adventures magazine, volume 1, number 1, from December of 1936. Now this is a pulp, it is not a comic. It is important to keep that in mind. Pulps came before comics. I would say in sort of low grade it could be about $300-350 bucks. But in good condition this baby could go up towards $700. So keep that in mind if you happen to have one of these kicking around in the garage.
Coming up we have got a very special treat. We talk to our favorite Flash Gordon expert in a Bif Bam Pow exclusive.
70 years ago Flash Gordon conquered the universe. And now he is here to save the Des Plains theater. Hi, I am Douglas Bean and I am the president of the Des Plains theater preservation society. And we are collecting money to help save the old Des Plains theater In downtown Des Plaines which was built in 1925.
And we are showing the entire 1940 season of Flash Gordon conquers the universe. Back when these serials first started it was a time when the movies were taking over from vaudeville. There were all kinds of things going on. But the serials were what really brought people back.
No matter what was showing, people wanted to know what the next installment was. What would happen to Flash Gordon? How would he conquer Ming? How would Baron help him out?
Queen Fria, would she help him? Would she go against him and align herself with Ming? How would the space ship get out of on disaster or another?
And all of the cheesy effects that we think of now were so stunning back then, and fed children’s imaginations. Every episode ended with a cliffhanger, they were the sequels of their day. In fact George Lucas credits his early fascination with shows like Flash Gordon with giving him the inspiration to create Star Wars. There were enemies towards Ming.
It was a social thing. And it was very American. A lot of these serials dealt in terms the adults and children cold relate too. The fascist of Germany and Italy and Japan are easily recognizable in their architecture and their dress in these movies.
The real fascination with these shows, people of my age grew up watching them on Sunday mornings by the sides of their parents. Who have told them how important it was to them as children and how they looked forward to these movies. And how the did anything. How they worked extra hours. They snuck into the theater. They did anything to get to see Flash Gordon again.
Alright I got to get back to work, you know how it goes. But before I do some ominous parting words that I believe came from a Whitehouse spokesman. Pathetic earthlings who can save you now?

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Bif Bam Pow Wow
Episode “Iron Man”

Tom: I am an Iron Man fan. Friend’s fans and esteemed creditors welcome to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow. I am Tom your invincible host and today we are going to take a look at Iron man. Now despite what you have heard about this new John Favro creation that is in the works. Iron man has been around for more than forty years and in many incarnations.
He is probably best known as a member of the avengers, but Iron Man is a righteous super hero in his own right. He is dark, mysterious, conflicted, and one of the more intriguing marvel creations. Whether it is comic books TV series, cartoons or movies, there will always be room for iron man on my shelf.
Iron man was perhaps one of the only comic book characters, excluding perhaps maybe C Montgomery Burns from the Simpsons, be inspired by the millionaires Howard Hughes. Now his fir appearance was in March 1963, in Tales of suspense number thirty nine. His mission was eventually to take on criminals and spies but he quickly widened hi scope to include communist and basically anyone ho threatened the security of America.
George bush is a very big Iron man fan let me tell you. Now the iron man suit, well its kind of a long story, and this is why you got to see the movie and read the comics. I mean, that’s what we are here for right? Ok, now the suit, he needs it to kind of keep his heart beating and it also gave him special powers. Dick Cheney is also a very big Iron Man fan.
Now just as the iron man character evolved through the years so to I his patented armor. Some of hi more memorable outfits include the classic red and gold, that debuted in tales of suspense number forty eight. Which eventually morphed into the preppy silver and red in the eighties, hey even armor suits need to change with the times baby.
And finally we have the current and my personal favorite extremis armor. Now before you get all whooped up about the new John Favro film I have got a couple of recommendations to get you up to sped on iron man.
Ok folks, it is time for my favorite part of the show, Toms picks and pans. The first thing I want to mention is iron man number one twenty eight. That is volume one people. It is the first issue of the demon in a bottle storyline. This is critical iron man. It is his history, it is what he is all about, it’s what he is known for. Demon in a bottle is where iron man I like chugging scotch at nine thirty in the morning. Trying to put on his boots a like falling over and firing off repulse ray into crowds and stuff.
Oh it is so hilarious, you got to check it out, really classic iron man, it I what he is known for. They taken All those issues and collected them into a really nice trade paper back, you really should check it out. Very important.
Ok, my personal favorite iron man is recent offering by write Warren Ellis who is super cool. He brought you the extremist story line. Where the suit is all updated and it like taps into tony Starks brain and he can control the armor by remote and do all sorts of cool stuff. You really should check it out. The arts good too. Extremist also collected in a trade paper back. Don’t miss it.
Alright people here I what to avoid when it comes to iron man. There was a cartoon series in 1994 that was just well, awful. It is awful, it is terrible. He animation is okay, but and the dialog is just painful to listen to. God, Tony Starks mullet I bad, oh, I say just avoid it all, all together, all together.
Alright all you collectors get on the edge of your seats because now I am going to tell you about tales of suspense number 39. If you are lucky enough to have this book, or if you find one, even in mediocre condition, with he cover kind beat up. Maybe a little brown. You could still probably sell his book for about anywhere from $500 to $1500 dollars. That’s what I am saying. This book is extremely hot right now because of the movie. Everybody is snatching it up left and right so, there you go.
A really good condition copy, well that could go upwards of eight to ten grand. It is the first appearance of iron man, right? Aright now don’t touch that pace maker people because I have got a very special customer coming in. Mr. Davey, and he Is going to review the invincible iron man DVD. To warn john Favro ht not to do. Aright Davey take it away you got like uh, 90 seconds.
Davey: Well thank Tommy. Dear john Favro I saw your excellent picture Zathura, and I got to say I think it would be perfectly impossible to direct the iron man picture. I watched this direct to DVD animated version of iron man though. It makes some mistakes that I would like to make sure you don’t fall into the same pitfalls.
First of all iron mans origins. You are probably familiar with this but in the comics iron man is a character who I born out of the Vietnamese conflict. He is hero against communism. His movie transplants him to modern day china. Yeah you got to update the story, but somehow we got to make sure that he is not a hero against Asians or any sort o ethnicity. You will probably put him in the middle east. I would say avoid any stereotypes.
Just a tip. Second of all, yes it has got to be updated to suit the modern day times, but there is certain elements to this character and who he is that should not be altered. This movie has iron mans father still being alive, shouldn’t be the case. Iron man should be his own person who is coming into his own. He owns his own company, he invents his own suits ,everything about him is original.
Having his father still alive is not as important as maybe giving Bruce Wayne parents alive or Peter Parkers uncle Ben alive, but I still think that is a change which is unnecessary here. Third of all, tying into that, I know I can relate to being a billionaire industrialist. Many people may not be able to; I am just saying that we keep him grounded and fairly relatable.
Finally, the animation in this is pretty terrible. I have seen Robert Downey Junior live and in person, he is much more animated than this movie ever will be, so you are already on good track right there.
So in conclusion, I am just hoping that you can make the bet possible picture. Signed a friend of the fans, Davey Sohl.
Tom: Awesome, I hope you got all of this notes there Mister Favro, alright you listening? Very special thanks to you my friend Mr. Davey, good work. Alright I got to go now, but first some parting word s of wisdom courtesy of tony Stark. They say the bet weapon is one you never have to use. I say the bet weapon is one you only have to use once.

Episode “Vampires”

Tom: From Count Dracula to count Chocula, vampire myths have haunted popular culture for centuries and today I m going to give o one more good reason to be afraid of the dark. Well hello my friends and welcome, or shall I say velcome? It is another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow.
Now like Braham stokers Dracula I like to sleep all day and play all night, that’s basically where the similarities and, with the blood drinking and the screaming and the running. Anyway I am Tom your congenial guide on the journey through pop and geek culture. Now not since Nosferatu has there been a vampire story this awesome, and I am talking about thirty days of night.
It is a comic horror mini series that was a breakout success for writer Steve Niles. And of course is soon to be a major motion picture. Thirty days of night is set in the small Alaska town called Barrow. Way up north there in the arctic circle, where they are plunged into complete darkness for almost thirty days during the winter.
It is the perfect place for sun hating vampire to ply his trade you might ay. Soon Vampires are flocking there like old people to Fort Lauderdale. A veritable feeding frenzy ensues and a few remaining towns’ folk have to fend them off in increasingly creative ways until the sun once again rises.
It is powerful stuff, and this series has almost single handedly revived the horror genre. And I am here to tell you, you have got to read this before the movie comes out. Oh and then you a go get dark days which is the sequel to thirty days of night.
Now grab the garlic cloves and turn the lights on because I have got more vampire favorite coming right up. In Toms picks and pans. Alright ladies and gentleman, here we go. I have already mentioned thirty days of night, and I can’t say enough good this about this book. But I won’t go on any further, just do yourself a favor, and pick it up, great horror. Also by the same writer Steve Niles, he has go a little character he created by the name of Cal McDonald. Who I completely love. He is a hard drinking, hard drug doing, pill popping monster hunter and he is awesome.
This is actually a novel called dial M for monster. And I high recommend checking this out. But we have some other comics as well. Now one of the best monster hunters of all time is Hellboy. Mike Mignola created Hellboy in 1993, this is a fantastic book. Definitely check it out. Now maybe you are thinking oh Hellboy has been around for awhile. I don’t know if I could actually get into it, maybe I can t find it. Seed of destruction, volume on Hellboy, read it, buy it. Mignolas artwork is awesome; his writing is awesome, funny kick ass. You must buy.
Now all you Joss Whedon fans, I know you are out there. You are out there chomping at the bit for moiré Buffy. Well now you got it, Joss Whedon ended season seven of Buffy in television. And now season eight is right here in comic book form. Here it is, you can buy it, it is coming out, come pick it up. And sooner or later I am sure it will be collected in a trade paperback or something like that. but for no you can get it in individual issues. Very enjoyable for all the Buffy fans.
I also recommend a Joss Whedon book called Fray, which you might not know about. It is about a slayer set way in the future. Kind of cool, you might dig it. Now ladies and gentleman, Bruce Campbell, evil dead 2. Fantastic I have to recommend the sequel, Army of Darkness. Very good stuff. Hilarious, low budget, fantastic. Good monster killing right here.
Now for the back issue of the week. I mentioned Hellboy earlier. Hellboy first appeared in the San Diego comicon comics issue number 2 very obscure. So that’s the first appearance of Hellboy. Right now it only goes for about twenty or thirty bucks if you can find it. But it is the first appearance of Hellboy people, it I going to be an investment, I think.
Last but not least, the bottom of the barrel. Marvel has tried to bring back, blade. This I not Wesley Snipes, this is lame, this I painful. It is so not good. Don’t spend your comic dollar on blade. It was really brutal, marvel tried and they failed. I apologize Marvel; you go other good stuff but this no dice.
Now sit tight, because I got a real cool treat for you. I sent my friend Mary out into the world to have an actual interview with a vampire. Well a vampire enthusiast at least. She was kind enough to let us into her layer o help us dispel some of these common vampire myths.
Mary: Thanks Tom you know I am so thrilled to be acting out scenes from one of m favorite movies of all time, interview with a vampire. You mean I am interviewing a vampire, you got to be kidding me.
Q: What ever is a psychic vampire?
Alex Savage: Basically what a psychic vampire is, is we are people that basically don’t produce our own energy levels, so we need to borrow those from other people, consensually. But there are some feeders who do drink blood and they take their life force out of the bold. I actually used to be one of those.
Mary: What are some of your favorite vampire books? I know you mentioned Anne rice.
Alex Savage: Of course she is kind of the goddess of all things vampire. Um ,or the ethical psychic vampire by Raven Kaldera, which will teach you a little bit about what it is and the differentiation between people who are really psi vamps or sanguid vamps. And people who are kind of just like saddlers, kind of going along with the pop culture flow.
Mary: I got to know as far as movies, because I am a movie geek. What’s your favorite Vampire movie?
Alex Savage: I have a few, I have to round them off, and of course interview with a vampire is one o my favorites. Because it was beautifully shot. And you know lots of good looking men playing the right characters. Uh, the hunger, classic. And near dark.
Mary: So I got to ask you Christopher lee, or Tom cruise what’s your favorite vamp on screen?
Alex Savage: Um, Tom Cruise I thought did a really great job but actually. Io like Stuart Townsend.
Mary: Do you really?
Q: Are there any vampire balls or conventions?
Alex Savage: There is vampire Lestat ball that goes on every Halloween season in New Orleans and then there is also endless nigh which is a psi vamp sort of fetish ball that goes on in New York. You can go thee to VampireLestatfanclub.com and get all the information about the party, the ball. You know what to wear, where to go, what to check out. What stores you can go to there, to find clothing and accessories. Hey have tons of them there.
Tom: Awesome, special thanks go out to my friend Mary from DVD geeks, who haven’t been seen since. Jesus I go to go. Well I am going to leave you today with the Adams family credo; we gladly feast on those who would subdue us. Until next time baby.

Episode “Spiderman”

Tom: Hey my friend, if you’re not already suffering form arachnophobia from al the Spidey hype this year. Well the crawl on up to the screen for my take on all things Spiderman. Thwit baby!
Well hello my little darlings and welcome to another exciting installment of Bif Bam Pow Wow. I am creepy, I am crawly, and I am Tom, your amazing, spectacular and sensational host for your foray into geek culture.
Now Spiderman has always been ranked among the best dressed as far as super heroes go. And the other day the question came up: Tom, um, what’s your favorite Spiderman costume? Well I had to give this some thought, a little more than I usually do to stupid questions and I eventually came up with an answer. And today I am going to go little Joan Rivers on us.
Now most of you all are familiar with the classic red and blue spider man costume, which first appeared in amazing fantasy #15, summer of 1962. But there have been some interesting variations recently. Such as the scarlet spider, spawned by the clone saga. The black costume from secret wars #8. And what’s known as the iron Spidey, a new outfit debuted in the amazing Spiderman issue #529, Mr. Parker, Mr. Washington.
So if I could pick my favorite, well we all think the black costume is cool right? Iron Spidey is all right, he has got all those arms. Scarlet spider, clone saga, a little painful. I guess I got to go classic red and blue. That to me just says swinging through the streets of Manhattan, right?
So you asked for it, you got it. If you would like to rate my wardrobe, just bring it on. In the meantime I have got some spiderific recommendations for you.
First off for you Spiderman aficionados, I want to recommend a little book called ultimate Spiderman. No I know what your thinking, your thinking, ultimate Spiderman? That’s like, not even part of the regular marvel universe. Why would I ever want to read this? But I am going to tell you. Brian Michael Bendis has done some of his best work right here. Alright, highly recommended, Spiderman is a kid again. Everything that is interesting about Spiderman is in this book. Everything you have ever enjoyed about the character is this right here. Highly recommended if you have ever been hesitant, pick it up. Start with volume one, there is a whole bunch of these out there. Bendis is a writing machine and this baby rocks.
Now something also a little more recent, I highly recommend the Spiderman story from the civil war. This is Spiderman up to date. This, you need to read this if you are going to keep reading Spiderman, currently. This is where the marvel universe is going this year. And if you don’t now what’s going on in spidey's life, you need to know. Read this. Alright my friends?
Now, as a special pick, on DVD I know it’s out there and you can find it. The little box set with all the Spiderman cartoons from the sixties. That’s the stuff that gave s little theme song that we all know and live. You know, Spiderman, Spiderman, friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Go find it, they are cheesy, they are terrible, they are fantastic, and I love them. I could watch them again, and again, and again, alright?
Now, it may not be Spiderman specific, but I am going to recommend it anyway. This is ultimate alliances, a little video game. I got mine for the Xbox because that’s what I have, alright haven’t upgraded to 360, but I am working on it. I don’t make a lot of money here ok people. Don’t look at me like I should be Rockefeller. Ultimate alliances, you can be any marvel character. There is like 5 marvel characters that you can be. One of them Spidey, very good highly recommended. Good team put him on your tea, ultimate alliances, good stuff.
Now ladies and gentleman, the back issue of the week. The most common misconception I get here at the store, I that amazing Spiderman #1 is the first appearance of Spiderman. This I so false, amazing Spiderman #1 is not the first appearance of Spiderman. Amazing fantasy 15 from the summer of 1962 alright? That was an ice short little Spiderman story. Spidey’s on the cover, he is swinging, he is carrying that dude who’s going no!
Alright, what can you expect, the first issue, the first appearance of Spiderman, amazing fantasy 15, might be worth. Alright, in rally good condition I have seen this book upwards of forty to fifty thousand. I know it has gone for more than that But I have also seen, touched and read a copy that was basically falling apart in my hands. And it went for $1900. This is a true collector’s item. One of those rare books that will always maintain value. Always go up in value, if you are looking to invest in comics, this might be a good place to start.
And now the bottom of the barrel, Spidey stories to avoid. I am sorry Kevin Smith, I am so sorry. You are a really good write. You have had some great runs on some great comics. But your black cat story, it was terrible, it was awful. Even with Terry Dodson’s amazing artwork. And Terry Dodson draws some of the best looking girls in comics, stated, true. But Kevin, dude you made us wait so long for this, how long did it take for issue six to come out? Like a year and a half, dude. Painful, just painful. Brutal, not worth it. Keep your money in your pocket for this one.
And finally I will say, everybody was so excited about this one, Spiderman reign. This was written by a really god writer, Andy Digel, who I really like. And his Atom strange work, totally worth checking out. But this, the art was kind of cool, but it is basically a Dark Knight Returns rip-off. Everyone’s so excited about it but it’s just not that good. Just not that god, painful. Oh and as a side bar, this little beauty was dedicated to Sid Fischer, a fantastic artist who died way too soon. He fell off the top of a bar in Japan, what happened with that?
Now don’t go anywhere Gwen Stacy or you might get your neck snapped. What we got coming up for you is a little sit down we had with one of the new hot artist in the biz. That’s right, the creator of Spiderman legend of the spider clan, Scottie Young.
Scottie Young: My name is Scottie Young and I primarily draw comic books for marvel comics. I have been doing that for about six years.
Q: If you could give Spiderman an extreme makeover, What would you change?
Scottie Young: Personally I would get rid of all the webbing in his costume, because it’s terrible to draw. It’s so annoying to draw, but I don’t now, it is a hard question ,it really is a really good design.
Q: What is your favorite Spiderman outfit?
Scottie Young: I love the black costume. I just think it’s, I like the idea of ha because it played around not only with the visuals of him looking darker and slicer but it also added an element of darkness to the character himself. Kind of this clean cut school boy, this costume takes him away from that a little bit and starts to take him to a darker place. So I liked that aspect of the darker costume.
Q: If you could give Spiderman one new power, what would it be?
Scottie Young: One power that would be tough, maybe like regeneration. I don’t know, like cut an arm off and grow it back.
Q: Does it bother you if people refer to your style as “American manga”.
Scottie Young: I wouldn’t say it bother me, I definitely learned over the years, my style of drawing no matter how I change it or do this or that. Is always a little hot or old with people. So I don’t let it bother me. I always understand why they make the distinction. As long as they are talking abut my stuff I am cool, It’s all good. I don’t care what they categorize me in.
Tom: Well that’s all the time we have, my parting words of wisdom today come courtesy of Eddie Brock. Never wound, what you cannot kill, indeed.

<media:text type="html"><![CDATA[Bif Bam Pow Wow
Episode “Zombies”

Tom: They are creepy, they are lifelike, they will suck the brains right out of your skull boy! No it’s not another presidential debate, oh ha-ha. It is my favorite new horror series and it is coming right up.
Het welcome to another exciting installment of the series Bif Bam Pow Wow. I am Tom your mild mannered host here to share my superhero like insights into the world of geek culture. Now today I want to let you in on one of my personal favorites. A zombie series that rises above so to speak, all the others in the genre.
It is called the walking dead, and this series came out of no where in 2003 to become an instant cult classic. The story seems like something we have seen and read a million times before. A world overrun by zombies were the survivors hunker together to fight off the living dead and each other. But that is where the similarities end.
The Walking Dead, by comic industry superstar Robert Kirkman draws its strength from its main character. A police officer named Rick Grimes, who wakes up from a coma in a hospital surrounded by zombies. It is entirely a character driven series, full of unexpected turns. Great story telling and even better it is in awesome black and white artwork. Which really makes all the violence stands out.
Another little tidbit, keep your eyes open for Kirkmans new project, the first he’s got going since the walking dead. Called the Astounding Wolfman, coming soon to a comic book store near you. Now don’t wander to off by yourself, not even for a second, stay tuned because I have a grave load of recommendation coming your way.
Alright everybody welcome to my favorite part of the show Toms picks and pans. Now first off as I mentioned earlier I really, really think you should all be reading Robert Kirkmans Walking Dead. Such a good book, don’t let the title fool you it’s not just about zombies. Now, great book, image comics prices this volume at $9.99, totally worth buying. You will be hooked immediately you will buy all the rest. Great book, don’t let it pass you by, totally serious.
Now also keep in mind Marvel Comics, a little bit more mainstream but very amusing has this little number. The Marvel zombies, very funny, well done. You get to see Peter Parker eat Mary Jane, great stuff. Not in the way you think, alright everybody clean it up or whatever. Good stuff though, very amusing, great artwork.
Now also on DVD, if you haven’t got it already or if you haven’t seen it, you’re an idiot. Dawn of the dead, George A Romero. Awesome, classic, now he also did night of the living dead, but my favorite Dawn of the Living dead, here in the shopping mall. C’mon you know what I am talking about, don’t miss this, go buy it, go own it, watch it a million times, great stuff. Also the classic Penultimate zombie movie. Shaun of the Dead, great, great stuff. Relatively recent, really well done though. All the classics right in here, great movie don’t miss it.
Now what else, oh yeah, if you have. If you’re lucky enough to have a first print walking dead #1… You can probably expect a VF mint copy of walking dead #1 first printing, could probably go for anywhere from about $70 to $100 bucks. Now there was a very low print run on that number one so they did do a second printing with a different cover. Keep your eyes peeled for it, the first printing has sort of a yellowish look to it. So don’t be fooled, alright. So $90 to $100 for that first print. Lucky you.
And last but not least something to avoid in the zombie genre. I hate to say it but George A Romero has a little series of comics that he wrote called Land of the Dead. Just not that good, it’s got his name on it so I know you really want to run out there and support him because he is so awesome. But this series really falls short, there is just kind of gore for no reason and it’s just sort of lame, and painful.
Alright you can put down your pencils and relax, no more test after this I promise. Now since I knew we would be talking about zombies and cops with the walking dead today I thought hey, what a perfect opportunity to check out this new DVD I got in the mail called Zombie Cop. And I have invited a very special guest, my boy Rory.
Now if you take Robo cop, then mix it with the Crow and water it down like a matchbox 20 song, you know what you got? You got Zombie cop. And honestly, kudos to these guys. They are a couple kids in Akron Ohio, I don’t know maybe in there 30’s, I don’t know. But you know they take a camcorder, they edit it. It’s seen it’s on the show isn’t it. And so you know even Scorsese had to make Boxcar Bertha at one point. If they learned something from this, you know. More power to them, but honestly it jut misses the mark so bad.
You know its not even cheesy campy fun. It is very, very dull, nothing is exaggerated. Everything it, the acting isn’t like Oh my god! Its more like oh my god. You know and there's no exaggeration, so there’s no fun in it. There is not a lot of energy put into it. It Is just a very, very dull, dull experience. Now some people say you are too hard on it, this movie isn’t Citizen Kane, it’s not Gone with the Wind. But you know what it is trying to be a campy bad horror film that people can laugh at and people don’t laugh at it. So I honestly can’t recommend it. I think it is a failure as a bad movie if that makes sense.
Now if you want a horror movie that you can laugh at, I would say check out the Dawn of the Dead remake from 2004 directed by Zach Snider of 300 fame. Because here is a movie that is really, really scary and really, really funny at the same time. But it is really, really funny in the way that it is not parodying a zombie movie. It is, you know knot trying to be campy bad, it’s actually funny because they wrote a funny joke. They had a funny cut; there were funny actors in it. There was that Richard Cheese song, going down with a sickness, over these guys shooting zombies that look like Jay Leno with a shotgun. Hilarious!
It is a great movie. I would also say check out the, it’s actually a song. Re: Your brains, it actually a great song about zombies taking over an office. Oh my god, hooligans taking over the pretzel hut, ah this is what I was made for Ha-ha.
Well that is all the time we have, I am exhausted and drained. My special thanks to Rory from DVD geeks who hangs out at the mall all the time and dresses up like a cop. Now remember folks if you ever find yourself surrounded by zombies. Remember they can’t run down hills, no wait that’s grizzlies. No wait maybe they can’t climb trees. No that’s bears again. Well whatever in any case just remember aim for the head.

Episode “Batman”

Tom: Hey let me ask you something, what would you do if you are a billionaire playboy with a really sweet car and your parents were brutally murdered in front of you when you were a child? Well if your answer is strap on some tights, a really sweet gadget filled belt. Hit the streets and fight crime. Well hey, your going to want to watch this.

Well hello loyal customers I am Tom mild mannered comic book store manager by day and by night I am a mild mannered comic book store manager. Oh my god. Now there has been a lot of buzz about the store about the new Batman movie that has been shooting scenes near by. And it has brought in all the bat freaks. You know who you are all right; you have been coming in and asking me the same question like a million times. And I am ready to murder you I am ready to just kill you all. And you all are asking me the same thing, hey Tom, who is your favorite batman? Who is your favorite batman? Now I am only going to answer this once, but first I think it is necessary to have a little batman refresher course.

Batman for the uninitiated debuted in all his bat glory in detective comic’s number 27. This was the so called golden age. He was a remorseless cool vigilantly, during the classic fifties and sixties period. Batman sort of took a turn from gritty vigilantly to campy goofy weird story lines. Yeah this was a painful time for our bat friend.

Flash forward to the eighties, we have the modern era with Allen Moore and Frank miller. Now this is the more contemporary super hero and so many back story, story lines that it will just make your head explode If I try to explain them all to you.

To answer your question which I completely forgot, umm what was it. Umm yeah ok so here is a list of my favorite batman’s from first to worst. They are as follows.

Frank miller: Dark night returns, Batman #1, awesome. And then Jeff Loeb, really good brings out the best in the bad, always a good guy. Then I got to say I like the golden age batman, old school punching people, killing crime lords dark gritty awesome. And at the bottom of the list I guess I got to say George Clooney, or maybe Adam West. Or maybe both maybe put them in the bat cave together and let them have a monkey knife fight to see who sucks more.

Now! Don’t touch that Bat dial! Because I have my favorite picks and pans of the week in a little segment I like to call um, Tom’s picks and pans.

Alright folks, the following are a bunch of stuff that you should definitely be checking out. Get your arse down to your local comic book store or get on the internet and check this stuff out. Alright, the first thing, if you’re not reading it, you should be, Batman long Halloween, a lesser known batman book, but so good. Everybody blows it off, but it is awesome, awesome, and awesome. Jeff Loeb amazing writes with the classic team up of him and artist Tim Sail. Tim Sail is the artist on heroes; he draws all those paintings on the future and stuff. Batman long Halloween highly, highly recommended. All collected one nice volume. Check it out.

Now on DVD if you need a cartoon fix, I highly recommend, you must buy, batman the animated series, or batman superman adventures, great stuff, awesome, awesome, awesome. Created by Paul Dini, he is the mastermind behind all the cartoons, also the guy who created Harley Quinn, you know Jokers psychotic girlfriend, great stuff. Good guy.

Now here is the real diamond in the ruff, if you are adventurous, if you can get on the internet and dig deep, you might find a copy of batman dead end, a fabulous, fabulous fan film. So good, it is batman kicking everybody’s ass, you have got to check it out. Batman dead end, internet; find it.
Now as for back issues, everybody always wants to know the price of batman #1. Well folks if you happen to own a copy of batman #1 in horrible condition, totally falling apart, cover off. You can probably get about $30,000 for it. Now if you have a good copy. Not a reprint, not restored copy of batman #1, it is basically priceless; you can set your own price. But I know it has sold for 500, 600, even 700 grand. This is American history people.

Alright now last but not least, ladies and gentleman, this Is Grant Morrison’s run on batman. It is painful don’t read it. It sucks. I love you Grant Morrison, you’re a great freaking writer, when you are on, you are on. And I know all the Grant Morrison fans are saying give it a chance, give it a chance. But I will tell you it’s not worth it. It totally blows. If Grant Morrison wants to practice being a novelist, go for it write books. Don’t take my comic book money to do so, alright dude?

Alright now, boys and girls, dim the lights, come a little closer, now Tommy’s got a special, special treat for you my friend. As I mentioned earlier the new Batman production was actually shooting some scenes right near my comic book shop. Now security is unbelievably tight, but I managed to get a special guest in there who will get us a live behind the scenes poop. Let’s check it.

Thanks tom, Hi my name is, my name is not important. What is important is that I got the biggest scoop on the worst kept secret in all of Hollywood film making today. Here in my city Chicago they are filming, the new batman movie. The legend is known as Rory’s first kiss. This is probably the worst kept secret because they are not even hiding the GPD cars, the Gotham Police Department cars. People are able to get a picture on their cell phone of the Gotham City bank, and of course in April there was that big fire on top of the post office, which attracted enough media attention to make sure that everybody knew the film was being shot here.

I get my call and I show up at five o clock in the morning I am the first one on the set. No body is there before me except the check in crew. And she sends me into the extras holding area. Extra’s holding is an industry term for where they hold the extras. And while I am there the girl comes by with the coffee cart. And she gives me a cup of coffee; she gives me sugar and real cream. Not that powdered stuff. Finally after about four hours we get brought in this room, where we sit and we see these big cameras. And we see these guys in cargo pants turning cameras on, turning cameras off. Moving lights, they all had ball caps on and they were young. Tom if you ever need a scoop from the set you just call me I am your guy.

Alright that pretty much wraps it up bat boys and bat girls. Because you know I mean I got to get back to work so uh, hey. You know if you have any suggestions or maybe suggestive photos, of maybe bat girl, bat woman, poison ivy, harlequin. Go ahead and email those to me alright? Now in the meantime I would like to wrap this up with a quote from the immortal Adam West. Penguin, Joker, Riddler, and Cat woman too, the sum of the angles of that rectangle is too monstrous to contemplate.

Alright keep reading comics and only read the good stuff not cheapness aright? See you.
